The Strokes, the New York City-based indie band, released Is This It, their debut album, in 2001. The group had only formed a few years before but quickly became one of the hottest new groups, creating a bidding war for their first record after only a demo was released and a handful of shows played. They eventually signed with RCA and released Is This It in the summer of 2001. The album went to #33 on the Billboard Charts and was later certified Platinum. It started a career that has lasted into the present day and helped usher in a new era of indie music.
