The Dark Knight is a superhero movie from 2008, the second in the Dark Knight Trilogy. The film, which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, saw Christian Bale reprising his role as Batman and Heat Ledger starring as the Joker. The movie was an enormous hit, a crucial shift in the modern movie industry, but it was also infamous for Ledger's tragic death shortly after they wrapped filming. Ledger ultimately won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor posthumously. It made just over $1 billion at the box office, a figure that set records.
