On January 17, 1994, at 4:30 in the morning, an earthquake hit the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. The earthquake lasted for nearly 20 seconds, hitting 6.8 on the Richter scale, followed by two 6.0 after shocks. In that time, nearly $50 billion dollars of damage was done.
