Beat Happening was an indie band from Olympia, WA founded in 1982. The band played a paired down style somewhat similar to early rock n roll, singing melodically about boyfriends and girlfriends over sparse drums. They released most of their material on their own K Records, a label ran by guitarist and singer Calvin Johnson that was home to many of the great bands from the Pacific Northwest. In 1989, the band released Black Candy, their third LP. The album was a critical success and has since gone on to be regarded as a classic in the scene. This original Beat Happening shirt, with tearing on the print, is from the 1989 release of Black Candy on K Records.
