In 1971, Alice Hutchins, the California-born artist who was then living in Paris, debuted her innovative and interactive sculpture: Nebula. Nebula featured magnets, like most of her work, but what was different about this piece is that it was, like pop art, made for the consumer. Not only could pedestrians move the little ball bearings and change the shape of the structure, but you could also buy it and interact with this Fluxus-inspired fine art from the comfort of your own home. This was a radical idea. Hutchins passed away in 2009 after a long career. The Nebula sculpture is still highly sought after and significant for its contributions for fine art.
