The San Francisco FrontRunners, a gay running club that traces its roots back to the early 1970s, began hosting the Gay Run in 1980. Since then, they've hosted the annual run, which features both 5k and 10k races. They also still meet weekly for casual runs. The group's place in San Francisco history is significant for their inclusivity, they were not exclusively a LGBTQ club and also were open to runners of all skill levels, making it a welcoming and easy going place for all athletes. This original San Francisco FrontRunners, with a few light marks, is from their 12th annual Gay Run in 1991.
