Ritchie Valens didn't write "La Bamba." In fact, it had been sung for possibly hundreds of years before he released his version in 1958. But when Valens put that rock n roll styling on the traditional Mexican folk song, it became a song so big that it is now a part of our shared cultural memory. Tragically, Valens died a year after the song's release, in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, but his version of "La Bamba" will continue to live on for the rest of time. This vintage Ritchie Valens shirt from the 1980s, nicely worn and faded, pays tribute to his biggest song, "La Bamba."
