Dark Shadows was a soap opera that ran on ABC from 1966 until 1971. While it followed certain soap tropes and aesthetics, it broke from them in one very important way: this was not about the every day lives of normal people, it was about vampires. The show's main character was Barnabas Collins, a 175-year old vampire. While it was never the most popular show on television, it became a cult favorite, eventually being revived on television and a Tim Burton-directed movie.
