Dale Earnhardt was a professional stock car driver. He began racing for NASCAR in 1975. Jeff Gordon was also a stock car driver. He began racing in 1990. Gordon was the new guy and Earnhardt the elder statesmen. They raced together and both found success. Gordon won the Daytona 500 in 1997 and 99, Earnhardt won it in 98. Sadly, during the Daytona 500 in 2001, Earnhardt died in a crash that occurred during the final lap. And while it's a tragic thing to happen, it's hard to think of a better way to go for someone who dedicated his life to the sport. Because it needs that kid of commitment.
