Elijah Muhammad was the leader of the Nation Of Islam, the American religious institution that focused on Black liberation. Muhammad converted to Islam as an adult when he was living in Detroit. And then, after only four years, he became the leader of the NOI. Under his leadership, the organization grew into one of the most important, and feared, religious institutions in the country. Muhammad himself was important, but some of his students became even more so, like Louis Farrakhan, Malcolm X, and even Muhammad Ali.
