The Simpsons is an animated television show. It debuted in 1989 but the family originally appeared in shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show two years prior. The concept was generic for TV: a family sitcom. But Matt Groening subverted expectations by making the family dysfunctional and sometimes dumb but still full of heart. There was Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie, as well as an entire town of people filled with characters. The Simpsons was also home to some of the best comedic writers of the era, like Conan O'Brien, John Swartzwelder, Jon Vitti, and many more. It's still on the air today, making it one of the longest-running animated series, scripted primetime show, and sitcom.
