Marcus Garvey was a political activist known for his work advocating for the Black community. Born in Jamaica at the end of the 19th century, he formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association And African Communities League in 1916 and moved to Harlem shortly after to help the organization spread in the United States. Garvey preached for unifying the African diaspora and desired to ultimately separate from white culture and society, ideally returning to Africa. His beliefs, while controversial at times, were important for many other 20th century activists and started new and important conversations in the US and abroad. This vintage two-sided Marcus Garvey poster, in great condition with marks and edgewear as well as a handwritten note addressed to drummer Olatunji on the bottom, is from an event honoring Garvey on what would've been his 100th birthday.
