Insane Clown Posse, the rap duo made up of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, were founded in Detroit, MI in 1989. They were always outsiders. They were into backyard wrestling and horror rap. They fused their interests and threw it together with some face paint to make something completely unique and underground. ICP started their own label, Psychopathic Records, and began releasing records. They were eventually picked up by major label Island for a short period of time. It was during this era that they released The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, a Platinum-selling album that furthered the group's Dark Carnival mythology, which eventually was revealed to be Christian theology. Despite their outsider status, they have maintained a following so devout and massive that the FBI unsuccessfully tried to categorize them as a gang.
