Kareem Abdul-Jabbar came to the Lakers in 1975. He was already an established and well-respected player, he had won the 1971 Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks and was awarded Finals MVP as well as Most Valuable Player for the entire season. Abdul-Jabbar won MVP three times with the Lakers, in 1976, 77, and 80. The Lakers built their team for the rest of the 70s, acquiring Magic Johnson in the draft in 1979, and the team completely exploded in the 80s. They won the championship in 80, 82, 85, 87, and 88. He retired in 1989 as one fo the most decorated and best basketball players to ever play the game.
