Producer Rick Rubin, known for his work with the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, and Slayer, founded Def Jam Records with Russell Simmons in 1984. He left the company in 1988 after Lyor Cohen became president. The same year, Rubin started a new label, Def American Recordings. He brought with Slayer with him and quickly signed acts like Danzig, Andrew Dice Clay, and The Black Crowes. The label changed their name to simply American Recordings in 1993 because "def" was included in the dictionary making it too mainstream a word according to Rubin. The label still exists to this day. This original Def American three-sided promo shirt, in great condition, is from the label's earliest days.
